“AI Slop” has become the latest badge of discernment on social media, especially LinkedIn.
It’s the modern equivalent of pointing at an image in 2006 and proudly declaring, “That’s photoshopped.” Of course it was.
New tools always produce awkward phases. Early mass adoption inevitably creates uneven output. We saw it with Photoshop. We saw it with social media. We saw it with marketing automation. And now we’re seeing it with generative AI.
This is not a crisis. It’s a product adoption curve.
We are still early in the innovation cycle. Early adopters experiment. Some optimize for speed. Some optimize for volume. Some critique loudly. All of it is predictable. Over time, standards normalize. Tools improve. The craft evolves.
The chatter from internet sleuths quiets, and eventually we begin to marvel at how the tool elevated the work. Beneath that evolution, however, a more important principle is operating.
Artificial intelligence does not create “slop.” It amplifies the inputs it receives.
If you feed it vague thinking, rushed prompts, and limited editorial oversight, you will most likely get mediocre output commonly labeled “AI slop.” If you approach the work with clear intent, provide context, and apply professional standards in review, the tool creates leverage.
That is not a technology problem. It is a usage problem.
You wouldn’t hammer a screw into a board. You also shouldn’t drop ill-conceived ideas into a generative system and expect award-winning content.
The Law of Cause and Effect still applies. Results follow inputs. The Law of Sowing and Reaping is not less relevant in the age of machine learning. If anything, it is more visible. You reap what you sow. You get out what you put in, in marketing, in leadership, and in systems design.
This is where the conversation often goes sideways.
It is easier to critique what others are producing than to examine the rigor behind our own standards. Mature leadership focuses inward before outward. If low-quality content is flooding a channel, the root cause is not the existence of a tool. It is weak inputs, unclear positioning, and insufficient review.
Every piece of content still passes through human judgment.
That part rarely gets enough attention in the “AI Slop” debate. Even if AI drafts it, a human approves it. A human determines the standard. A human decides whether it reflects the brand.
That responsibility never left the building.
I use AI to accelerate research, pressure-test arguments, iterate faster, and explore angles I may not have considered. What it does not do is replace two decades of discernment and quality control developed across a career. AI still requires a human editor willing to take full accountability for the work being published.
In fact, from my perspective, AI is raising the bar for long-form content. For a season, we compressed ideas to accommodate shrinking attention spans. Now we are seeing renewed appreciation for depth. When production becomes easier, quality becomes the differentiator. Strategic framing becomes the edge. Editorial discipline remains the guardrail that protects both clarity and credibility.
The organizations that will lead in this next phase are not those rejecting AI. Nor are they who are flooding the market with automated engagement-seeking content in service of a metrics dashboard. They are led by executives who understand leverage and maintain standards simultaneously.
They use automation to eliminate low-value repetition so teams can focus on positioning, narrative architecture, and insight development. Tools become accelerants to strategy, not substitutes for thinking.
And they understand something deeper. When attention is directed outward toward what others are doing wrong, growth stalls. Energy spent policing a phase is energy not invested in mastering the craft.
This discussion is not about defending or condemning a tool. It is about recognizing where we are in the adoption curve and responding intellectually. This phase will pass. It always does. The standards we bring to our work will remain.
The real question is not whether “AI Slop” exists. It is whether we are willing to hold ourselves to a level of disciplined focus that transcends the tool entirely.
Because in the end, every system reveals the quality of its inputs.
And every leader reveals the quality of their standards.
